Opera in Pop Culture: “Where have I heard that song before?”
Wed. September 15th at 7:00 p.m.

Everyday most of us are exposed to opera music, though many of us may not realize it.  In this multi-media presentation, Bob Levi highlights and demonstrates numerous examples of opera melodies incorporated into various popular culture sources such as movies, recordings, radio, TV, and advertising.  Whether you are an opera lover or novice, you’ll enjoy this entertaining program. 

Cybersleuthing Your Family Tree       Thurs. September 23rd at 7:00 p.m.       

Genealogy librarian and local historian Tina Beaird will show how to use free genealogy websites as well as subscription online resources, including those available at the library, to trace your family tree.  You will also learn how to evaluate websites to find the most reliable sources of information.

Today's challenging marketplace requires that job seekers go above and beyond what their competition is doing. Dan Burns, author of the award winning book The First 60 Seconds, will provide the tools and techniques to make a great first impression in those first moments, and help people win their job interview--before it begins. Bring your ideas and questions to this interactive and informative session.

 

Finding Your Chicago Ancestors                          Thurs. October 7th at 7:00 p.m.  

Overcome the challenges of searching for your Chicago area relatives, such as address and street name changes and scores of unindexed newspapers.  Discover some resources that family historians often overlook, including fire insurance maps, inquest records, and probate cases.  Grace DuMelle, a family researcher and historian at the Newberry library, will present tips from her award-winning book, Finding Your Chicago Ancestors:  A Beginner¹s Guide to Family History Research in the City and Cook County.

Classic Monster Mash                   Thurs. October 28th at 7:00 p.m.               

Spend an evening with Dracula, Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster and many more bone-chilling villains in this delightfully creepy celebration of classic movie monsters!  Enjoy a collection of the greatest monster moments from a number of fantastically eerie films, and explore the fascinating stories behind these timeless characters.  A few DVDs will be given away during this fun and interactive program.  Steven Frenzel will also explain the power of cinematic storytelling and renew in you the enjoyment of these favorites.
