READING LEVEL SYSTEMS

Lexile Level
Developed by MetaMetrics, Inc., the Lexile Framework measures semantic and syntactic difficulty, as well as assesses the reader's comprehension of the text.

Kindergarten = Lexile BR
Grade 1 = 100 – 400
Grade 2 = 300 – 600
Grade 3 = 500 – 800
Grade 4 = 600 – 900
Grade 5 = 700 – 1000
Grade 6 = 800 - 1050

Guided Reading Level (GRL)
Developed by Irene C. Fountas, a professor in the School of Education at Lesley University, and Gay Su Pinnell, a professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at Ohio State University. Based on criteria such as vocabulary, sentence complexity, book and print features (i.e. pages and illustrations), text structure (i.e. flashbacks), and themes and ideas, Fountas and Pinnell split literacy development into four stages. These stages are: Emergent Readers (Levels A-E); Early Readers (Levels F-J); Early Fluent Readers (Levels K-P); and Fluent Readers (Levels Q-W).

Grade 1 = A - I
Grade 2 = J - P
Grade 3 = O - P
Grade 4 = Q - S
Grade 5 = T - V
Grade 6 = W - Z

ATOS Level
Developed by Renaissance Learning, the ATOS Readability Formula determines the reading difficulty of a book by calculating the semantic difficulty (measuring word length, frequency, and familiarity); syntactic difficulty (measuring sentence length); and book length. ATOS is used in the Accelerated Reader program. ATOS lists the grade and month. For example, an ATOS level of 3.5 equals what the average third grader can read in the fifth month of the school year.

Early-Intervention Level
Designed for beginning readers who show signs of reading difficulties. Reading Recovery is a short-term Early-Intervention program developed by Dr. Marie M. Clay, a New Zealand educator and researcher.

Grade 1 = 1 - 16
Grade 2 = 17 - 24
Grade 3 = 25
Grade 4 = 26 – 27
Grade 5 = 28
Grade 6 = 29 - 30

DRA Levels    (Developmental Reading Assessment)
Leveling criteria developed by Joetta Beaver. See DRA Developmental Reading Assessment K-3 Teacher Resource Guide (Celebration Press, 2001).
